Bhutan Travel: A time standstill travel experience

Hardly impacted by the 21st century, Bhutan - a country that has chosen to move at its own pace - is not a place you simply visit. Here, progress is measured alongside its citizens’ well-being, forests are well-protected, cultures are lived and not performed for visitors - but carried forward in daily life. Travel here is intentional, carefully managed, not to limit you, but to make this place what it is. You will not find a crowd at every turn but spaces, stillness, and moments much needed for a weary soul.

Encounter indigenous inhabitants going around temples and stupas, offering butter lamps draped in their elegant national costumes are common sights. Yet you are never far away from the country’s one-of-a-kind ancient mystical marvels to unplug. The timeless “Tshechus” festivals in Bhutan happening with imposing backdrop views, bags for country’s colorful cultural titbits -provides a Mecca for those seeking cultural high.

Home to some of the highest unscathed peaks of the world, serene countryside dotted with time-honored homesteads, age-old monasteries and temples, claret-clad Buddhist monks, fluttering prayer flags, and fast-flowing rivers, the tales of supernatural forces, crazy gods, and ancient mysticism are the fabrics of everyday life in Bhutan.

Here, stories of highly learned masters having magical powers of precognition and healing and how monk votaries discovered the key to life and semi-immortality come thick and fast on the ground on your travels that often bewilders but never bores

It has something impressive to offer anyone willing to endure.

A quick virtual tour of Bhutan

Eastwardly of Paro, a, hour long journey is the capital Thimphu, the cosmopolitan city of Bhutan swaggering with its leviathan bronze Buddha statue that affords a view of its valley below and other such as the much glorified “Takin,” the national animal of Bhutan, Philatelists’ own, the Bhutan postal museum, and the Royal Textile Academy. The latter highlights the country’s rich, living tradition of weaving culture.

Further west is prosperous Punakha, the erstwhile capital of Bhutan until 1955. It is alight with the redoubtable Punakha ‘Dzong’ fortress that sits at the confluence of the Mo and Pho rivers. This monument is the epitome of Bhutan's finest specimen of native works: unmistakably Bhutanese in terms of style and architecture.

Nearby is the much-protected Phobjikha valley; a designated glacial flatland in Bhutan which serves as the winter roosting ground for the infrequent black-necked cranes; and the extravagantly embellished Gangtey Goemba monastery is stretched out graciously on a hilltop securing the view of the gingerbread-like farmsteads of the Phobjikha valley below.

The Heartland of Bhutan is Bumthang, the spiritual capital of Bhutan, conspicuous for its sylvan context commended with apple orchards, sporadically adorned in Swiss-chalets like farmsteads, grandiose age-old monasteries, temples including the much-lauded “Tamzhing Lhakhang,” a provisionally published site for UNESCO's World Heritage Centre for intangible cultures and heritage, and the historical Jakar Dzong (fort); all submerged in the shadow of the colossus Mount Gangkhar Puensum, Bhutan’s lofty, arguably the world's chaste unclimbed peak at 24,843ft with absolutely no human footprints on its crest.
