Summer is Bhutan’s monsoon season. The country receives significant rainfall, which nourishes the landscape, turning the mountains into a deep, refreshing green. The air is fresh, and the scenery is lush and vibrant.

Bhutan has several flight routes in Southeast Asia, as well as an overland route from one of the three Indian states that border Bhutan, a possibility recommended ONLY for those exploring India.

Getting into Bhutan

The air journey is considered one of the most scenic flight experiences and also the most convenient way to reach Bhutan. Actually, your adventure to Bhutan begins before you arrive, offering views of the world’s highest peaks. Two airlines operate flights to Bhutan, Druk-Air and Bhutan Airlines.

Selecting the right connection is crucial for a seamless trip. There are three official ground entry points are Phuentsholing, Samdrup Jongkhar and Gelephu. These small towns can serve only as transit destinations and do not have many activities for you to engage with. We recommend these routes for an overland journey only if you are combining your Bhutan trip with India.

Under the banner "Druk-Air", this national carrier operates flights to Paro Bhutan from Bangkok in Thailand, Delhi, Kolkata, Bodh Gaya, Guwahati and Mumbai in India, Kathmandu in Nepal, Dhaka in Bangladesh and Changi in Singapore, among others.

Travel by Land

Bhutan Airlines, a privately owned airline company, operates two aircraft with a capacity of 126 passengers, including 12 business class seats and 114 economy class seats. The airline operates daily flights from Bangkok to Paro via Kolkata and three flights a week from Delhi via Kathmandu.

Phuentsholing in the south west of Bhutan is approximately 170 km away from the Indian National airport in Baghdogra, to the border town and to the capital city is another 4-hour drive through the subtropical regions.

Gelephu in south-central Bhutan is another point of entry into Bhutan for visitors. It is approximately 250 km from the capital city, Thimphu, which takes about 8 hours, crossing three districts of Bhutan.

Samdrup Jongkhar, in the eastern part of Bhutan. Approximately 150 km away from the Guwahati airport, it takes you through the regions in the east, crossing Tashigang, Mongar, Bumthang, Wangdue Phodrang and Punakha districts, and requires a minimum of three days to get to the capital city.
